Our co-founders Nina and Lauren embarked on their very first buying trip in April 2019. The location you ask? Morocco!
No better place to source product for your new lifestyle brand, than in the incredible far North African country that borders the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. Distinguished by its Berber, Arabian and European cultural influences right? Right.
Overflowing with history, culture, multiple languages, amazing food, vibrant spices and an ever changing natural landscape. Morocco was chosen for its abundance of artisans, with extreme craftsmanship and talent, who work and honour the land in the most humble and fulfilling of ways.
Here’s an overview of our first sourcing trip, a 10 day adventure. We hope you enjoy as much as we did.
Day 1 - Chefchaouen.
The Blue City, where the earth meets the heavens. We were blown away by the uniqueness of this place. Not only did we arrive unprepared for the cooler temperatures, *note to self, pack a woolen jumper and a wind breaker or two, as you’re high up in the mountains here. The views will blow your mind and you will most likely take 12,000 photos of the endless charming blue facades that greet you.
We sourced our first product for Two Fly Femme here, the experience will stay in our hearts forever. Off the beaten track, guided by locals, around one million corners, upstairs, down stairs, inside a hidden nook, we were welcomed by an elderly gentleman, with a grand smile and the infamous Moroccan mint tea to sip on.
There on the roof terrace, while we waited patiently to be shown the most amazing selection of vintage, cactus silk and camel wool rugs to form the beginning of the Moroccan Tales collection.
Chefchaouen, our first transaction, it was here we became business owners.
Day 3 - Fez.
The old Medina, Fez. Wow, what a place. Travel tip, Google maps is your friend here, your very best friend. Next travel tip, be prepared for the abundance of smells, like really prepared.
It was here we learnt about the processing and dying of leather, the making and producing of leather goods, in particular 'poufs' which you can find exclusively online in our shop.
The weather was unfortunate in Fez, in a complete and utter down pour, there we were, carrying heavy rugs on our shoulders, through the mud, in the rain, semi lost, holding onto our breath whilst witnessing butchery, thinking to ourselves, what we have got ourselves in for as we made our way home to the comforts of our Riad.
Our dedication to communicate with the locals, the strength to barter, the energy to transport everything back in those conditions, it was real. Commitment levels were high this day.
Day 5 - Essaouira.
Our favourite location by far, we plan to retire in this dreamy coastal village one day. Fingers crossed! We sourced the most humble of art works here, for personal use, not for sale on Two Fly Femme, sorry.
We don’t want to say too much about this magical place, but we do encourage you to research the area and add it to your travel-bucket-list, now.
Day 7 - Marrakesh.
If you’ve been to Marrakesh, you know that this is one of the coolest cities in the world! Firstly, we ate at the most incredible cafes and restaurants ever, shout out to Nina for being a foodie researcher extraordinaire.
plus 61 - one of our absolute favourites, incredible interior and a nice break from tagines and couscous, they also have a lovely wine selection.
la famille - the most beautiful setting and memorable food right in the heart of the medina, only open for lunch and you definitely will need to book. We also purchased some unique interior pieces (for personal use) in their store.
nomad - a stunning place to eat beautiful Moroccan food in the evenings listening to the muezzin call to prayer.
el fenn - is a must for delicious cocktails and beautiful rooftop views!
cafe des epices - for a healthy breakfast and good coffee that gets you started for a day of exploring the hustling city...
This is where we sourced most of product for our Two Fly Femme store. Rugs, leather goods, paintings, ceramics, accessories, homewares, you name it – we acquired it. We met the most dedicated, hardworking, humble human beings on this planet, who we now call friends and have business relationships with, lucky us!
Day 10 - home bound.
Lauren jets back to London, Nina jets back to Poland.
